If TIN Mismatches

Two options:

  1. Request New W-9 (Recommended) — Send an email asking them to correct their info. Common fixes: use legal name instead of nickname, check for typos.
  2. File Anyway — Proceed with the mismatched TIN. Risk: IRS may reject or send a notice.
